How To Stop Comparing Yourself To Others!

"I wish my body was like hers, she is so skinny" "Why aren't I pretty like all those other girls?" "Why did he choose her over me?"

Comparing yourself to others is such a negative mindset full of worthlessness, self hate, guilt, jealousy and bitchiness in which you start to hate on yourself, others or even compete against other people to prove a sense of self worth. This is truly not a happy place to be in and can lead to dangerous disorders and behaviours.

At some point in life and several times during life in fact every person will compare themselves to others and start to feel their insecurities take over. It's ok to feel what your feeling and is normal to go through this but it all lies in how you deal with it and how you act. I struggled with comparing myself a lot during my childhood and through my ED which nearly destroyed me, even now I still struggle but I have learnt to focus on who I am, my talents and my journey which has in turn lead to me comparing myself to others a lot less.

So how do you stop comparing yourself to others? Here are my top 5 tips!

My Top 5 Tips On How To Stop Comparing Yourself To Others!
  1. Everyone has a story: Yes every single person in this world has a story! A story of what they've gone through, why they are who they are and why they do what they do... including you! It's so important to realise this and to know everyone is different, has insecurities, talents and are on different paths in there journey. Understanding your own journey is so important too as no one else has gone through exactly what you've gone through so comparing yourself to someone else's life is so irrelevant to where you are in your own. Believing in your journey and understanding that everyone has a story helps you to become less concerned about comparing yourself to others and lets you focus on where you want to go in life and what you want to achieve. P.S I love observing people and learning about others stories to inspire and remind me we ALL have a story that changes the world!
  2. Inspiration: When you compare yourself to someone else it becomes very easy for it to come out as jealousy and hate. Everyone does this at some point but it is not ok! Being jealous and hating on someone isn't going to make them stop or change nor is it going to magically make you have what they have, all it does is show your insecurities and negativity. Every time you start to feel that comparing, jealous and hate rear its ugly head through the door respond with love. Let what they have or do inspire you, complement them, ask them questions about what they have or do and let it motivate you in your goals! Always work on responding with love and letting what others do fill your heart with inspiration.
  3. Goals/Dreams: What are my goals and dreams? Sit down with a pen, paper, Internet, books, magazines and write it all down no matter how big or small. Plan and make little goals and steps to reach your dreams!
  4. Take action: Your dreams don't work unless you do! Get planning, go out and do! Even when your scared, tired and want to give up, keep moving and doing!
  5. Work hard: Success doesn't know tired, excuses, or comparing yourself to others it only knows hard work. If you happen to fall get back up and keep trying. Surround yourself with loving, positive people who believe in your goals, dreams and will support you. This is your life, your journey so make it everything you want it to be!
Comparing yourself to others is no way to live your life. Believe in your story, in who you are and all the magic inside your heart. Let others inspire you and take action towards your goals, then you will be everything you dream!

21 Things To Do When You Go Camping!

One of my favourite childhood memories is going camping, I went every year from the time I was 9 months old until I was 17. I was very blessed to have my family, both sets of grandparents, family friends and other friends come join over the years. My family would go to a place called Kuaotunu which is 30 minutes outside Whitianga in the Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand. I believe this is one of the most beautifulest places in New Zealand and is a home for my family and me. I have so many great memories and stories to this place from boogie boarding for hours on my favourite beaches, playing card and board games with family, catching my first fish, standing on rubbish bins to help debone fish, cave walks, wearing 90's sun glasses and singing along to Roxette... "I'M GONNA GET DRESSED FOR SUCCESS SHAPING ME UP FOR THE BIG TIME, BABY", jumping on my grandparents air bed, having a birthday party for a dog, being flooded out and the list goes on.

Eventually my parents wanted to try somewhere different so we started going to Bowentown which is near Tauranga and this has also been a highlight and carries lots of great memories too. When I was 18 I left home, started flatting and doing other things so I haven't gone for the last few years but camping is something I want to get back into as I grow older as it has been such  a highlight for my family and me.

These are some of my favourite things I did while I was camping and are a must do! So start planning, packing and go on your merry way!
  1. Play Pontoon with 5 cent pieces
  2. Meditate on the beach while the suns rising
  3. Write messages in the sand
  4. Make sand castles by dribbling wet sand! (My Dad would always make lots of these and my Mum would called them a Hobbit Vills)
  5. Collect cicada shells in a bucket and pour them over someones head!
  6. Boogie board all day baby!
  7. Play Chinese Checkers with 6 players (If you want to be a cheeky sh!t and don't want someone to win put your piece in there final home spot! My family might of nearly banned me for doing this :p)
  8. Star watch on top of a hill
  9. Go on bush walks and take picnics
  10. Walk through a Weta cave (or any cave for that matter!)
  11. Learn to put up your own tent
  12. Sneak up to someone and put ice down their back while their having an afternoon snooze
  13. Fish of a wharf (Although I do not condone killing fishies! :p)
  14. Go in a boat and feel the ocean breeze
  15. Visit a local town near by and buy knick knacky things
  16. Feed ducks
  17. Learn to be a killer card shark in Uno
  18. Play spotlight, tag, hide n seek and traffic lights as the sun is going down
  19. Collect Muscles
  20. Slide down hills
  21. Go for an evening stroll down the beach and crush the edges of built up sand!

All About Straight Edge!

What is Straight Edge?
Straight edge is abstaining from alcohol, drugs, promiscuous sex and can include a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle. It is but not limited to the punk lifestyle as this scene is very much heavily involved in these things. It's about not shaming your body and mind, and not having to follow what everyone else is doing just for the sake of doing it too and being able stand up for what you believe in and looking after yourself.
"Originated from the punkrock/hardcore scene. The philosophy/life-choice that humans should have strength, pride, dignity, honor, and self respect; that they shouldn't engage in activities that are a disgrace to their minds and bodies. (such as ingesting and/or becoming addicted to harmful substances for fun, lying and/or being two-faced, and sharing your body sexually with another person when there isn't even a true emotional bond there)"
-Urban Dictionary
Why be Straight Edge?
I believe being straight edge is a great way to look after your mind, body and soul especially if you have struggled with a mental illness or addiction. Ultimately alcohol, drugs, promiscuous sex and unhealthy eating are very slippery slopes to walk on if you struggle with a mental illness/addiction because it becomes very easy to cross your illness into something else such as going from a former bulimic to an alcoholic because you still struggle, are susceptible or aren't dealing with the issues in your life in a positive way.

Alcohol, drugs and unhealthy eating can also have side effects such as cognitive problems, worsening depression, weight gain, paranoia and psychosis, disorientation, unpredictable and violent behaviour and many more which can contribute to relapsing and becoming sucked in once again behind a negative copping mechanism leading you to that ugly dark path.

By making a lifestyle choice and commitment to abstain from these things even if you don't struggle with a mental illness/addiction is an act of self love and insures that your on a path of living healthily and happy.
Why Straight Edge isn't boring!
Some of you maybe think ehhh straight edge is sooo boring! Straight Edge is in fact fun it teaches you learn how to use your own imagination and be able entertain yourself, family, friends and strangers without getting high, drunk or having promiscuous sex.

For people who I am really comfortable around I have a tendency to act like a little kid, get hyper and giggle over the smallest excitements or immature things like if someone mentions farting I'm in giggles for 10 minutes tehe farting :p. I believe there is a lot to be learnt from the innocence of children and the fun/excitement they have over things like games such as hide n seek, hop scotch, handball, card and board games, going to the beach, boogie boarding, a theme park and creating your own world using your imagination and being silly. You don't need to be on drugs, drinking alcohol or having promiscuous sex to enjoy life. Be free, creative and use your imagination and inner child to enjoy the world Straight Edge!

My Top 5 Tips When Turning Straight Edge!
  1. Why?: Why do YOU want to turn Straight Edge? Grab a pen and paper and write it all down baby!
  2. Changes: What changes do I want to make? What changes am I prepared to make?
  3. One step at a time: Start out with one area to begin with for example this could be alcohol. Set a goal which could be that you want to cut down from drinking 2 glasses every night to 1. Focus on that goal for the next 2 weeks then set another goal in weeks 3 and 4 which could be to only drink 3x a week instead of every day. As you progress and reach your final goal in one area you can then move to another area such as the way you eat or smoking etc. If you struggle with drug, alcohol or sex addiction or mental illness please seek professional help!
  4. Friends/family: Do I have healthy friends and family? Who are my support people? Some of the people you hang around with maybe heavily involved in  dangerous and negative activities these people are bad influences and will try and bring you down. The best thing you can do is to cut these people out of your life as they are not true friends or family. You cannot save or help someone who doesn't want it. Just as you have made a choice for a healthier lifestyle they too have to make their own choice.
  5. Embrace your inner child: You know that silly billy, giggly thing hiding inside of you full of excitement, adventure and imagination use that to go explore the land of magic that is life! ;)

Straight Edge is looking after yourself and living a healthier, happier and positive lifestyle while still embracing having fun! Be a rebel a be Straight Edge! ;)

Choosing Recovery!

You don't chose to have an eating disorder, addiction or mental illness but you do chose recovery. No one is going to save you and your illness isn't going to magically disappear. Recovery is your choice and your road to walk on, others can guide and support you but only you can make and take action to be recovering.

Recovery isn't going to come easy, your going to have to work for it daily.Your going to have to fight through every meal, through your fears, issues, withdrawals, do things you hate, relapses and spending a lot of time feeling like shit but ask yourself am I happy with my life now? What if I am worthy of recovery? Recovery also comes with self discovery, the feeling of achieving something you thought you couldn't and being able to live out your dreams which are such beautiful gifts of life that you deserve and are worthy of. What if I am beautiful?, What if I can achieve anything I want? What if I can live out my dreams?
There is always something that triggers wanting recovery it maybe an event, someone saying something or a realisation whatever it is, it is gold and that reason for wanting recovery should be kept close to your heart and you should remind yourself daily. It will let you be willing to put your mind and body on the line to try new things and push through all the hard times during your recovery. Someone once said to me I can always go back to my eating disorder if I wanted to. This is true I could give up the fight any time I wanted. Having someone tell me this helped me to fight through my recovery and made me feel safe to know if my worst nightmares came true I could fall back into the monsters arms but ultimately there only two ways out of an eating disorder or addiction... recovery or dieing. Both ways are terrifying and can leave you feeling lost, stuck,in a tug a war and not knowing how to get out.

"To get something you never had, you have to do something you've never done."

I love this quote because it is so true and something to apply in all aspects of your life. Recovery is scary and your going to have to want it, give it everything you have and more to push through your barriers, confront things you don't like know matter how painful it is and do things that you don't want to and have never done before to get through this and to live life you want. Let me tell you something though you don't go through all that pain and hatred for nothing because that light and gift will be waiting for you at the end of the tunnel. I don't know what your light and gift is but I know it is everything you dream and more so before you think about giving up think about that light and gift... what do you want it to be?

It is important to remember you are never alone. You may feel like no one cares about you but trust me there are more people in this world that care about you than you know, for one I care about you :) Always hold on to the fact that there are people who care, are willing to help you and want to see you happy and healthy.

Recovery is worth it and always remember YOU are more than your eating disorder, addiction or mental health problem. You are a beautiful, talented and powerful human being that can achieve and be anything you want to be.
Why I Chose recovery?
I chose recovery on the 22nd February 2011 after going to visit an inpatient treatment centre to see if this was something that was an option to help me to get better. I had been stuck for a long time, I wanted to go out and live but at the same time I couldn't eat and getting fat was the only thing that came to mind when recovery came up but at the same time I didn't want to die. I was lost and felt so fucked up mentally. After making the decision to not go to inpatient treatment I knew how much it was going to hurt my parents telling them that I wasn't going to go. I realised then that I couldn't hurt my parents anymore and that I was never going to be able to do the things I dreamt about such as being able to do exercise and get muscley, leaving my home town, going flatting and going vegetarian. I was also so sick of people telling me what I could and couldn't do so in a lot of ways I was ready to stick a middle finger in the air to everyone and go out and make a wonderful life for myself. I made a promise to myself then to fight and to eat every meal, to get better, be healthy and achieve my dreams. I knew if I was going to recover I wanted to do it in style, I didn't go through all I went through just to have an ordinary life, I was going to be all that I wanted to be, achieve and do everything I wanted from this life and so from then my journey of recovery started.

My Top 5 Things To Think About When Choosing Recovery!
  1. Something to fight for: Ask yourself what it is going to help me through this? What is something I want to fight for? It could include family, friends, partner, kids, dreams, goals etc.
  2. Treatment programmes: Your eating disorder, addiction or mental illness will scream and try and tell you what to do but really think what is going to help me to get better? This may mean having someone take over your food, meal support, going to a treatment centre, counselling etc
  3. Support: Your support people are going to help you through and it is so important to have a few honest, positive and understanding support people you check in regularly with. This can be anyone from parents, Dr's, counsellors and friends. Who are my support people? How could they help me? How often would I need to see them?
  4. Goals: Goal setting is going to help you in your recovery because it is a life long journey and breaking it down into small goals and knowing what you have to do to reach each step makes it easier What could my goals be? What do I want to achieve? It could be today I'm going to eat every meal, my first goal is to gain x amount of weight, I want to learn to love ... about myself etc.
  5. Rewards: It is so important to celebrate your achievements and how far you've come. What would I want my rewards to be? Your rewards could include clothes, tattoos, piercings, going away for a weekend, doing some exercise etc.

Recovery is a choice and is possible, your life is more than your eating disorder, addiction or mental illness so declare war, never give up and fight for your dreams.

Making A Bucket List!

What is a bucket list?
Most of you will probably know what a bucket list is but for those of you that don't it is a list of things you want to do before you die. Your list can have as many or as little things as you want and can include anything. Dream crazy, wildly and fiercely! What do you want to do before you die?

Why make one?
I think it's important to make a bucket list because it's easy to get stuck in a dark place and forget how exciting and magical life can be. I named this blog after my bucket list and the theme song I wrote to my life called Rainbow-Rose's Land Of Magic because I see life as a land of magic as there are so many things to go explore, do, see and achieve (fun fact there for you! ;D). It's always good to remember that life is for living and to have fun!

Ideas you could include in your bucket list:
  • Visiting countries and landmarks
  • Learning languages
  • Adventures: Sky diving, bungee jumping, mountain climbing etc.
  • Events/festivals/celebrations: Tough Mudder, Holi, Cherry Blossom Festival etc.
  • Music: Writing your own songs, learning an instrument.
  • Concerts
  • Changing your appearance: Hair cuts/styles, tattoos, piercings, fashion.
  • Love: Making out in the rain, taking a romantic bath etc.
  • Taking up a new sport: Archery, Rock Climbing, Tennis, Soccer etc.
  • Learning a new hobby:  Taking drawing classes, painting etc.
  • Giving to others: Shaving your hair off for charity, giving a big gift to someone anonymously etc.

My Top 5 Tips When Making A Bucket List!
  1. Spend time: Write your bucket list over time as the things you want to go and do will change and grow over the years. I spent 2 years writing mine and it has 200 things on it! Although over the years there are more things I want to do and have added to the list, if they are not written down, then I have pictures around my room or always carry it with me in my mind.
  2. Silly little things: There are always those silly little things you want to do just for giggles! For me mine include going to the movies in my pj's, having a neon outfit exercise day with some friends and going dancing in my 7inch goth boots.
  3. Internet: Search, search, search! Search out other peoples bucket lists, events, landmarks, anything you want to do etc.
  4. Ask others: It's always interesting to hear what others have on their bucket list to get ideas or even tweak their ideas to your own style!
  5. Movies/TV shows: Come on who hasn't dreamt about living out a movie scene or a scene from a TV show?!?!

You have one life why not explore the land of magic?!?! Get busy search, creating and doing!

Smile Because You Are Beautiful: A Poem Of Self Love!

The magic lies in your heart of all that you are; you may feel like it's all dark but trust me this trouble won't last. This society is corrupt it contradicts what you should be so be a rebel and be a role model of what you want to be.

Society defines beauty but really all it does is destroy the human race of expressing the hidden wonders of individual creative pieces of art. It instead creates a devil demon sucking your soul to be left a dead ratted rag doll but the monster within is not going to win so smile because you are beautiful.

When the pain of yesterday hurts your soul and it takes its toll, you look in the mirror criticising everything you are, starving for perfection thinking if only you were prettier, skinnier and beautiful then this life would be better, crying tears of pain thinking of purging it all away. The demons are banging them drums, rotting your core, gonna turn you into a corpse but stand up because you are worth more than the devil demon leaving its scars. You're not going to take shit so get your gloves, put them on with the will to fight, stand up tall cause you know your strong, this lives a fight, never ever give it up, throwing punches through the sky cause no ones going to stop you, got to reach the top but of course don't forget to smile because you are beautiful.

When you feel broken sing a tune of I'm going to make it because the gorgeous person staring back at you in the mirror is going to be the one to save you. Be a dreamer and know you have the power to achieve anything great so don't be blind to your unique talents because it is fate that they are yours. Spread your wings, take flight and remain balanced but always remember to smile because you are beautiful.

Break the cycle of a world that's corrupt, blow the universe apart with your essence, rebirth from natures earth, you will then know your worth, so please fight this fight because you've got this life right here and now so don't let be anything else than who you are and smile because you are beautiful.
